So You Think You Can Dance: Top 20 Results

picture-22I promise I’ll be better next week, and I’ll blog before the results show as well as after.

So, this had to have been the BEST first show in the history of SYTYCD. The dancers, the choreography, the music, it was all amazing! By the end of a season, I never think I’ll like anyone in the next season as much as the previous. And I love that I’m frequently proven wrong.

So, quickly, I’m just going to comment on my favorite (and subsequently least favorite) numbers, and then we’ll get to results. I absolutely LOVED the first number. It was a hip-hop routine by Phillip and Jeanine, choreographed by Tabatha and Napolean. (I love them!) And it was awesome!! It totally reminded me of last seasons’ “Bleeding Love.” Anyway, I had no idea who Jeanine was before, but I’m a big fan.

My other favorite was the contemporary piece, choreographed by Mandy Moore, performed by Melissa and Ade. If you don’t remember, Melissa is the 29-year-old “oldie,” who is trained as a ballerina. The routine was absolutely beautiful, emotional, and there was a move with Melissa in the splits on Ade’s shoulders that I had to watch 2 more times because I was so impressed. Again, they were a couple I had no idea about before Wednesday.

I still think everyone was impressive, but if I had to pick my least favorites of the night, it would be the broadway routine by Asuka and Vitolio, (I totally love Vitolio) and the other hip-hop routine performed by Paris and Tony. It wasn’t that either one was bad. It’s just that A. Performing a broadway routine on the first night is just not going to tug at your heart like an emotional contemporary or hip-hop. And B. If you happened to follow an incredible number, you’re at a disadvantage. For Paris and Tony, it just didn’t do it for me. Comparing it to the first hip-hop routine, they just didn’t come close.

Ultimately, since you’ve probably watched the results by now, we know that Paris and Tony went home. And, to be honest, that’s exactly who I thought deserved to go. Tony was the one who barely scraped by in getting a place in the top 20, and I think it was pretty apparent in both his performance and dancing for his life that he was not in the same category as the rest of them. In dancing for their lives, I thought Vitolio was amazing, (which the judges apparently didn’t agree with) and Asuka, (who dances ballroom, which is difficult to dance for your life alone) performed the best of the girls. I was surprised to see they saved Karla first.

Well, I can only imagine how much better it’s going to get!!

I think I just can’t watch SYTYCD until the first top 20 show, because I’m still mad about Natalie Reid being shown the door with no explanation and without even getting to do a dance for her life.

You know, I think Paris is an amazing dancer, especially considering that her left leg is numb from the knee down. It goes to show that choreography really does affect how the voting goes. Also, on the subject of personal accomplishments, I think it is interesting that none of the Vegas footage mentioned that early fave Gabby suffers from rheumatoid arthritis. The fact that she can dance is HUGE! Eventually she won’t be able to walk and her joints will disintegrate. But did they even mention it? No. I bet dancing all day long all week long there completely wore her body down, its no wonder each dance was harder for her to perform than the previous one. Such a bummer.

That pissed me off too when Natalie got the boot. It was just wrong.
Last night was amazing. I think Phillip and Kopono are my favorites at this point. I can’t wait for a Sonja and a Mia performance. They are my absolute favorite choreographers. LOVE them.

So Ben was walking by when Melissa and Ade were performing and he ended up sitting down and watching them until the end- I even heard two “Wow”s escape from his mouth. That tells me they were easily the best of the night- really exciting top twenty! I didn’t even fast forward through that much because I was so impressed (just the crash test dummy routine and the fox trot- I thought both were verging on boring).

I was BLOWN AWAY by this show. Definately the best top 20 we’ve ever seen. I wasn’t surprised to see Paris and Tony go home. I didn’t know Paris was numb from the knee down! That’s honestly incredible. But I do remember them mentioning that Gabby has rheumatoid arthritis. I think it was the very first audition show.

Choreography really does affect so much! Music choice, too. Having popular music makes such a big difference. There are some Broadway routines I’ve absolutely adored (Remember Benji and Donyelle’s Hairspray routine?) but it depends on the piece they pick, what they do with it, and the dancer’s personality.
