The Amazing Race: Premiere Episode
When the four of us started this blog it was mainly because even though we’re really good friends in “real” life, none of us actually have much in common by way of media. We wanted to find some other people out there that shared similar interests as ourselves, and then we’re always up for some healthy debate! The Amazing Race is one of the few exceptions, because we all absolutely love the show- so we’ll be taking turns reviewing it. I’m absolutely looking forward to hearing some of the other reviews, since we rarely agree on anything. Lol.
I wrote this review as I watched, since the season premiere crammed so much in, and was so lengthy!
First Hour:
I really, really liked the twist in the beginning of the show this season. I always thought it was unfair that it was the fastest drivers to the airport that had the immediate advantage- or the ones that could find the ticket counter quickest. Totally thought it evened the playing field a lot more. I thought it was completely hilarious that the lawyer couldn’t figure out the clue until the very end, after telling all of America how smart he was. I think they’re a little annoying, so I was sad to see “yoga in the hood” not even make it on a plane. I thought they would have been fun to watch.
What did you guys think about the poker players lying about their profession? I wasn’t sure how long they were going to be able to pull that off- was it really smart or just really wrong? Then it turns out they don’t even make it to the second leg before they’re outed. They’re going to be the team to hate this season. I still can’t believe she ate two of the wasabi bombs- I wouldn’t want to be her later when those are coming out the other end!
Let me tell you how much I love the Japanese gameshow Majide!!! (Youtube it if you haven’t ever watched it- complete hysteria!) SO I was so excited to see the teams compete in a Japanese gameshow. Now I am not a sushi girl (had some bad sushi in Hawaii once and that was the end of that)- so this would not have been the challenge for me. But I can swallow absolutely anything – plug your nose, open your throat, and shove it in.
I was laughing so hard when Marcy pulled out the harmonica with the Japanese tourists (and their visors!). Did she think she was on some sort of pre-k field trip or what? The Globetrotters were so smart to watch for the other teams and follow them, I really think they’re going to have a slight advantage since they’re already teammates and have had to learn how to compromise. I was surprised there were no alliances formed yet, until the poker players started helping the brothers- although it was smart of the brothers to break off when they did, since the poker players are just not as smart as they think they are. I was so mad at them for making those poor old Japanese women run, it’s no wonder they lost tourists. Then they were more concerned about losing themselves, then losing two people!
Second hour:
I absolutely never understand why teams wait to get to the airport to book their flights- it’s the age of the internet people! At least there’s always an equalizer, which is why I thought it was so stupid of the second bus teams to give up their money to try and gain an hour of time.
Then there was the poker players spend bump. This was quite possibly the easiest speed bump in the history of The Amazing Race. I was at least expecting them to have to cook the Pho, anyone can dump the ingredients in a bowl! They totally lucked out with that- and then with the duck challenge. I’m just hoping their fighting, and the fact that none of the other teams besides the brothers actually likes them, will get them eliminated soon. I loved that before they even knew they were poker players, Zev could tell they weren’t being completely honest about themselves. Zev and Justin are my early favorites- mainly because I know Zev is going to be cracking us all up with his (true) observations.
The mud challenge was fabulous- those are always the best challenges, when contestants make fools out of themselves in front of the locals. Remember the cheese challenge in Switzerland last year? Love it when the producers splice in shots of everyone laughing at them
Then we come to the end, and of course two teams that grew up in rural areas would get the ducks in a row first! It was so obvious from the beginning that the trick was to remain calm and stay low with those ducks. Miss America was hilarious, with her bright yellow thong hanging out the back of her pants. “I’m having duck for dinner!”
I always think the couples that come on the show to “prove their relationship” are the most annoying- so I was thrilled when the most annoying of them, Garrett and Jessica went home first.
How was the show for you guys? Did I miss anything?
The Amazing Race is on CBS Sundays at 8pm PST

I am totally with you… on just about everything!! I always feel so bad that someone flies around the world, only to be sent home the next day. So, I loved the new twist. Yeah, it would suck. But, at least they didn’t leave the country. (Totally wish it was the lawyer who went home first! Idiot…)
I actually liked that the girls lied about their jobs. But, their lying may have put a bigger target on them. But, the gay brothers not telling people they’re gay is even better! It will be funny to see how many people they flirt with to get ahead. (Although, the girls may be on to them…)
It’s hard to pick favorites so soon, but I do love Zev. His blunt honesty will help keep us and his teammate laughing. I haven’t picked any other favorites yet- I have to see them for a few legs before I get attached. I’m kinda leaning toward the father/son duo.
I was bugged last season when there were no married couples. But, this time, the married couple is already annoying me. I hate it when one teammate is SO frustrated the other can’t complete a challenge. (Most likely, they would be having just as hard a time…) If my husband said, “I’m gonna rip her head off!” about me, I can’t imagine how hurt and angry I’d be. Seriously- calm down!!
Well, SO happy this season is here! LOVE this show! Someday… I’m going to apply. (Hopefully it will still be going when I’m not pregnant, not nursing, and in pretty good shape.)

Of course you probably already know what I’m going to say but I LOVE the poker players. I love their relationship. I love that they lied to everyone. They’re absolutely right, no one would help them, or is going to help them because of their professions. I hope they have a long career on the show.
Zev is going to be awesome to watch. I’m really glad he’s on.
I love that the brothers aren’t telling anyone they’re gay and I love that the poker players already seem to know what’s going on.
Great first episode!
