The Mentalist: The Scarlet Letter

blog_scarlet_letter_previewSometimes I forget how opinionated and how conservative Van Pelt is until she says something like she did about the sanctity of life and how suicide violates that in the opening bridge scene.  I love seeing characters like her on TV these days.  It doesn’t happen very often.  You could tell Rigsby was taken aback, but secretly I think that’s what he likes about Grace–that she speaks her mind and is unafraid to be who she is.  I cannot believe how he wussed out at the end, however.  He had his chance to ask her out and did not take it.  So disappointing.  I loved Cho’s comment to Rigsby, “You’re gonna die alone, man.”

The whole senator scandalwas pretty exciting, and honestly couldn’t quite figure out who was responsible until the end when Jane and Lisbon cracked the case.  I figured it was either Badsen’s husband or dad who had the affair with the victim, but never once did I suspect Badsen herself.  And the cleaning guy?  Wow, you’d think they’d do better background checks on people who work for a state investigation bureau.  I could not figure out how he survived that car crash at the end, only to find out that Cho was holding up his dead corpse the whole time to get a confession from Badsen.  “You abused a corpse!”  “No, we used a corpse.  No ab- involved.”

I thought for sure that doughnut box had something in it, too, so I didn’t blame Bosco for throwing it out.  I thought maybe he’d taken red frosting and drawn the signature Red John smiley face in the bottom or something.  That would have been pretty useless, though.  Patrick Jane is much smarter than that, however.  I guess the cleaning guy gave Jane a good idea by bugging the office.  Can’t wait to see what he does with the information he gets.  Lots of good conflict to come, no doubt.
