So You Think You Can Dance: Top 18 Results

max-ashley-blogI just realized (yes, it was a crazy week last week) that I never posted about the results of the top 18! So, now that I’ve totally forgotten everything I was going to say, including who even went home, maybe some of you can refresh my memory!

What I do remember is that Max and Kayla were in the bottom 3- totally undeserved, I thought. They were joined by Kupono and Ashley, and Caitlin and Jason. I really didn’t think Caitlin did as well as they gave her credit for. And I thought she should have gone home. (However, they did mention that part of the reason they kept her was because of her great Bollywood routine the week before.) Once they saved Caitlin, we knew it had to be Ashley going. Kayla IS freaking amazing… She just hasn’t shown much personality, and I think we might see her in the bottom again if she doesn’t show us a heart-wrenching performance.

As for the guys, I really think Kupono should have gone home. Even though Max is a “ballroomer,” I thought his solo kicked butt. That was one of the best ballroom solos I’ve seen. I think he got robbed. :( Kupono had better step it up and show that he deserved to stay. I don’t remember him doing anything noteworthy. And now that I think about it, since Kayla and Kupono will be paired up, I can definitely see Kupono holding Kayla back.

So, apparently, I was 0 for 2 last week. Let’s hope I do better this week.

Watch the top 16 perform tonight, 8pm PST, on Fox.

So You Think You Can Dance: Top 18 Perform

picture-4Well, I still thought (just about) everyone was great last night! However, I can’t say I was nearly as blown away as last week.

I just loved Randi and Evan from the start. No matter what Mary said to them about technique (which I totally expected from her) I still thought they were so much fun to watch! They are definitely up there as one of my favorite couples. I also just love Vitolio. But I don’t really care that much for Asuka. Their dance was beautiful and emotional! (Despite not being quite as technical either.) And my other favorite was Karla and Jonathan. But I think it’s just because I love the contemporary style. There are very few contemporary routines I don’t like. And I think they got lucky in getting a good genre this week to redeem themselves from the bottom last week.

Then there were a few dances that I didn’t love (but I love the dancers, and they still got good critiques.) I.e. Melissa and Ade’s funky jazz routine, and Kayla and Max’s (I can’t remember what style) routine. I don’t think either deserve to be in the bottom, but I just didn’t connect with their dances, and I wonder if America will agree.

I actually only thought one dance was bad- Caitlin and Jason’s hip hop! I knew from the beginning that Caitlin couldn’t hit hard enough. Of anyone, they deserve the bottom 3 tonight. And as much as I love Phillip, I think he and Jeanine deserve the bottom as well. I really don’t want them to go home, but their dance just wasn’t good! Sad! :( I have NO clue who else should or even will end up in the bottom. The judges really didn’t like Ashley and Kupono, but I thought they did well. Especially compared to the other terrible hip hop routine. (I did feel bad for Shane Sparks- whose routines both got ripped on…)

So, who were your favorites? Who deserves to go home this week?

So You Think You Can Dance: Top 20 Results

picture-22I promise I’ll be better next week, and I’ll blog before the results show as well as after.

So, this had to have been the BEST first show in the history of SYTYCD. The dancers, the choreography, the music, it was all amazing! By the end of a season, I never think I’ll like anyone in the next season as much as the previous. And I love that I’m frequently proven wrong.

So, quickly, I’m just going to comment on my favorite (and subsequently least favorite) numbers, and then we’ll get to results. I absolutely LOVED the first number. It was a hip-hop routine by Phillip and Jeanine, choreographed by Tabatha and Napolean. (I love them!) And it was awesome!! It totally reminded me of last seasons’ “Bleeding Love.” Anyway, I had no idea who Jeanine was before, but I’m a big fan.

My other favorite was the contemporary piece, choreographed by Mandy Moore, performed by Melissa and Ade. If you don’t remember, Melissa is the 29-year-old “oldie,” who is trained as a ballerina. The routine was absolutely beautiful, emotional, and there was a move with Melissa in the splits on Ade’s shoulders that I had to watch 2 more times because I was so impressed. Again, they were a couple I had no idea about before Wednesday.

I still think everyone was impressive, but if I had to pick my least favorites of the night, it would be the broadway routine by Asuka and Vitolio, (I totally love Vitolio) and the other hip-hop routine performed by Paris and Tony. It wasn’t that either one was bad. It’s just that A. Performing a broadway routine on the first night is just not going to tug at your heart like an emotional contemporary or hip-hop. And B. If you happened to follow an incredible number, you’re at a disadvantage. For Paris and Tony, it just didn’t do it for me. Comparing it to the first hip-hop routine, they just didn’t come close.

Ultimately, since you’ve probably watched the results by now, we know that Paris and Tony went home. And, to be honest, that’s exactly who I thought deserved to go. Tony was the one who barely scraped by in getting a place in the top 20, and I think it was pretty apparent in both his performance and dancing for his life that he was not in the same category as the rest of them. In dancing for their lives, I thought Vitolio was amazing, (which the judges apparently didn’t agree with) and Asuka, (who dances ballroom, which is difficult to dance for your life alone) performed the best of the girls. I was surprised to see they saved Karla first.

Well, I can only imagine how much better it’s going to get!!
